Snowshoe hiking  by candlelight, a roaring bonfire, and complimentary warm refreshments await couples, singles and families at the Friends of Horicon Marsh International Education Center’s 3rd annual candlelight hike/snowshoe. The Education Center will also be open for people to warm up, view the 20 minute “Horicon Marsh Story”, visit the gift shop or have the kids do a fun craft to bring home! Northern Cross Science  Foundation astronomers will be on site to help you view the night sky through telescopes or to talk about the stars if it is cloudy. Members of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club will be on the trail conducting short owl talks and calling for owls. Warm beverages and light snacks will be available inside the center.

The Friends of Horicon Marsh International Education Center will line the trails with candle-powered luminaries to welcome and guide hikers and snowshoers. Volunteers will be on hand for assistance and information. The lighted trail starts at the Bachhuber Impoundment trailhead behind the education center. Hiking and snowshoeing are free to the public. Don’t have your own snowshoes? Thanks to a generous Wisconsin Environmental Education Board grant and matching funds from the Friends group, snowshoes will be available to the public on a first come first serve basis at no charge.  There is no guarantee however that they will be available when you arrive. You may have to wait until a pair is turned in.

The Friends and staff hope for a big crowd this year and invite everyone to join them for the fun event! The snowshoe/hike is free and open to the public.
