Moraine Park Technical College in Beaver Dam Recognized as a Blue Zones Project Approved Worksite


Beaver Dam, Wisconsin –August 22, 2018 – Blue Zones Project® Dodge County held a ribbon cutting celebration today at Moraine Park Technical College (MPTC) in Beaver Dam to recognize the organization as the newest worksite to become Blue Zones Project Approved™. This designation demonstrates the commitment of Moraine Park and its wellness team to improve the well-being of employees by encouraging increased worksite networking, encouraging more movement during the day, and optimizing the food environment.


Lisa Pollard, Dean of MPTC Beaver Dam, said, “It is no small feat to earn this designation. From the stand-up desks that we have to our HRA and some of the other things that we do. We are really committed to health and wellness for all of us here at MPTC.”


Research shows that employees who have high-quality friends on the job are seven times as likely to be engaged in their work. Social relationships at work have been shown to boost employee retention, safety, work quality, and customer engagement. At Moraine Park Technical College, a College Mentor Program for employees is designed to match employees and foster professional relationships. With Blue Zones Project, MPTC launched a Potluck Moai, a group of employees who gather regularly to share plant-based lunches. With approximately 15 participants at each potluck, participants begin to think about food differently and are more willing to experiment with new dishes to share with the group. The recipes are being compiled into a book to share with employees. In the upcoming school year, MPTC plans to designate walking routes and form Walking Moais, further fostering professional social connections.


Employees at MPTC are also encouraged to move more through fitness classes that are offered during professional development days including yoga, Zumba, and a workshop on stretches that can be done in an office setting during the day. In the office workspaces, signs encourage employees to remember to take micro-breaks which are good for both the body and the mind. Well-being messages are displayed on computers and monitors throughout campus. Workplace benefits employees enjoy at MPTC include health and gym membership reimbursement and access to Go365, an employee health coaching program.


Moraine Park’s Beaver Dam Campus has enjoyed healthier options at the building’s café and at least 50% of the vending machine options will come from the healthy vending guidelines food list for the 2018-2019 school year. Plans are also in the works to host a plant-based cooking class in the upcoming school year.


“A year ago, we learned how we could become a Blue Zones Project Approved worksite and on that day more than 25 percent of our employees signed the personal pledge to improve their well-being. I knew this was going to be a good year! It was really a group effort,” said Wendy Herrmann, MPTC Beaver Dam Curriculum Coordinator. “We will be continuing with our potlucks over the coming years because it is a great time to get together and try new things and enjoy our camaraderie.”
