BEAVER DAM COMMUNITY HOSPITALS, INC. CAFE EARNS BLUE ZONES PROJECT APPROVEDTM RESTAURANT STATUS
Café provides healthy options for visitors, employees, and the community they serve
Beaver Dam, Wisc. – July 14, 2017 – Blue Zones Project®, Dodge County announced Beaver Dam Community Hospital (BDCH) Café as the newest Blue Zones Project Approved™ restaurant in Dodge County, reflecting its commitment to creating a healthier environment. Blue Zones Project is a community-led well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthier choices easier by encouraging simple changes to environment, policy, and social networks.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at 707 S. University Ave., to celebrate BDCH Café’s contribution to improving well-being in the community.
“I am thrilled that BDCH Café has made improvements to earn this distinction to help make healthy choices easier for everyone that we serve,” said Jim Feil, Director of Food Service. “The new Blue Zones-inspired menu options have been well received by our customers.”
Some of the most popular new dishes include Roasted Sweet Potato and Black Bean Tacos and a Toasted Sourdough Portabella Sandwich with White Bean Pesto and Pickled Onions. Additionally, special events and meetings that are catered by the hospital café now feature delicious plant-based hors d’oeuvres.
Additional steps that the café took to achieve this designation include sourcing fresh produce from Two Good Farms in Columbus, WI, serving fruits and vegetables as default side dishes with combo meals, and offering fresh fruit-infused water every day as a beverage option.
“My take on a plant-based menu is that I try to take things that people are familiar with and put a twist onto them,” said BDCH Chef Kylie Peltier. “Eliminating processed foods and using real and fresh foods allows me to utilize my creativity to produce fun and nutritional meals while helping Dodge County in its journey towards better health”.
Blue Zones Project is brought to Dodge County through sponsorship by Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, in collaboration with Healthways®, Inc. and Blue Zones, LLC. Dodge County is the first Blue Zones Project demonstration site in the state.
