First Blue Zones Project Approved Faith-Based Community to be Recognized in Dodge County
Horicon, Wisconsin – February 5, 2018 – Blue Zones Project® Dodge County will celebrate the first faith-based community to become Blue Zones Project Approved™, Sacred Heart Parish. The Catholic Parish located in the “heart” of Dodge County demonstrated its commitment to improving the well-being of its parishioners and guests through this designation.
A ribbon-cutting celebration will be held at approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday, February 11, at Sacred Heart Parish (950 Washington St, Horicon) immediately following the regular weekend service.
Sacred Heart Parish has been working with Blue Zones Project on ways to better serve the congregation not only in spiritual well-being but also physical well-being. The parish started by forming a wellness committee. The committee decided it was important to emphasize the Blue Zones Power 9® principles that encourage connecting with other people: Family First, Belong, and Right Tribe.
Members of Sacred Heart started a Blue Zones Project Walking Moai which meets prior to weekday morning mass. A Walking Moai, pronounced “Mo-Eye,” is a group of up to eight people that meet at least once a week for 10 weeks, exploring the community and building friendships while tracking their steps together.
In January, Sacred Heart hosted its first of several plant slant potlucks and family game nights following the Saturday evening service. These events encourage healthier eating habits, help connect parish members, and provide an opportunity for families to spend quality time together.
“I enjoyed the plant slant potluck at Sacred Heart Church and I enjoyed playing games with other people,” commented Marilyn Guenterberg.
Guenterberg also learned about the Sacred Heart Parish Walking Moai at the event and has now started walking several times a week. “Doing this gets me out among people and meeting new friends. I plan on doing this on a regular basis for improved health.”
Blue Zones Project is brought to Dodge County through sponsorship by Beaver Dam Community Hospitals. Blue Zones Project Dodge County is a community-wide well-being improvement initiative—designed to make healthy choices easier through sustainable changes to environment, policy, and social networks. Dodge County is the first Blue Zones Project demonstration site in the state.
